Breastfeeding Support
We are proud to operate Eastern Iowa's only holistic lactation clinic, led by Certified Lactation Counselor and Birth Doula Kimberly Hendricks. Our model builds on the support provided by your nurse, midwife, or hospital-based lactation consultant during the first days after giving birth. We help mothers and babies navigate the challenges and joys of the breastfeeding relationship as it changes over time. We offer professional breastfeeding support, including:
- Feeding and latching assessments
- Tongue/lip tie and suck/swallow evaluations
- Help with milk supply issues, plugged ducts, nipple pain, and mastitis
- Weight checks and support for overcoming slow growth
- Help with pumping, bottle feeding, and returning to work
- Breastfeeding education classes and support groups
What to expect
Because we are independent practitioners, we are able to provide individualized, attentive care to each family we work with. We prioritize taking adequate time to assess your and your baby's needs. We allow 60 minutes for an initial consultation, and 45 minutes for follow up visits. A consultation includes a complete history detailing your concerns, an observation and assessment of an entire feeding, help and adjustments necessary for you and your baby, and time for you to ask questions, practice new skills, and gain confidence. After each consultation, we provide you with a written care plan which we can share with your other other health care provider(s), and a follow-up phone call or email.
Collaborative care
Our lactation clinic is a collaboration between allied practitioners whose scope of practice and expertise can complement lactation counseling services, when needed. Kimberly works closely with Kathy Devine if the need arises for lab work, clinical diagnosis, or prescriptions. Monica Basile helps babies with structural challenges, such as tongue ties, torticollis, or generalized tension, who need bodywork to help achieve optimal nursing function. Our office also stocks an array of helpful herbs and supplements for your convenience.
